When regular bandages aren’t doing the trick for treating your pet’s problems, it’s possible that you might need to come into Erickson Veterinary Hospital in Chico to learn about laser therapy instead. The word “laser” is actually an acronym that stands for “light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation.” In therapy, specific light wavelengths of lasers are used in order to treat conditions that are painful or debilitating for the animal. The technology that makes use of the right combination of wavelengths is known as a multiwave locked system, or MLS. Alternatively, if there is an issue that is internal, we also have the knowledge and means to carry out surgery when necessary.

The purpose of laser therapy is to get light energy into damaged cells, thereby stimulating intercellular activity. In doing so, the pain in your pet’s afflicted area is reduced and the damaged cells are able to recover much faster, speeding up the entire healing process. Some of the afflictions that are most commonly treated this way are arthritis, lick granuloma, ear inflammation, tendonitis, lameness, wounds and sinusitis. More specifically, some of the main benefits of MLS laser therapy include:

Accelerated cell growth and tissue repair

  • Heightened metabolic activity

  • Better vascular activity

  • Blocked pain signals to nerve cells, dulling pain

  • Immunoregulation

  • Reduction in formation of fibrous tissue from burns, cuts and more

  • Reduction in inflammation and discomfort

  • Superior nerve function
